A minimum of 13 people killed and ninety-eight hurt in train derailment in the nation of Mexico.
A fatal train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite opposition criticisms regarding the pace and management of the country's flagship government projects.
The accident occurred on the Interoceanic Train, a route constructed to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was intended to establish an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, intended to promote commercial progress in the area.
“We will rigorously clarify the reasons behind this incident,” declared the country's president.
The president announced that, of the approximately 250 people on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in critical condition. The president added plans to go to Oaxaca to meet those affected.
Major Initiative of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a central public works project of the previous administration, whose term ended the prior year. This project was closely associated with his administration's economic agenda for the southeastern region.
Another massive railway undertaking from that time, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the broader strategy to stimulate the economic fortunes of a comparatively less developed part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Risks Apprehensions
The building of both railway systems was managed by the army, marking a significant increase of its role in civilian infrastructure. They were executed at an rapid pace, beating expectations to be at least partly launched before the end of that presidency.
However, this rushed timetable had concurrently sparked ongoing questions over safety standards.
- Sunday's derailment was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This includes an prior collision this month when a train smashed into a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had a couple of non-fatal derailments.
Appeals for Audit and Pause
In the aftermath of the disaster, the leader of a primary political opposition called for an prompt suspension in the construction and operation of all comparable projects.
This halt was suggested while awaiting a thorough safety audit. The party stated that the loss of life "demands immediate answers."
In response, the president insisted that the train had been running in full accordance with all operational standards. Assurances were given that the government would remain "accountable" in both the construction and management of these national projects.
