The former Brazilian leader has been taken into custody after authorities found he posed a concrete flight risk while under house arrest.

The former head of state was found guilty of planning a government overthrow in the ninth month and handed more than over two decades in jail, but he remained under confinement pending appeals.

Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Justice Moraes said the decision to arrest the septuagenarian politician was a safety action after fresh information emerged.

This included seeking to disable his tracking device and a call for a public vigil that could enable a possible escape.

Judicial Records Show Escape Concerns

In a document approving the detention, the magistrate said data from the facility tracking Bolsonaro's house arrest suggested the former leader's aim to disable the electronic ankle bracelet to guarantee victory in his flight.

This, it said, would be made easier by the disorder caused by the protest called by his son.

His son, Flávio, who works as a congressional representative, called for a gathering of his backers near Bolsonaro's home to take place on Saturday night.

His son wrote on digital networks on the previous day: Will you battle for your country, or observe everything from your phone there on your settee? I urge you to battle with us."

He said the gathering would be so backers could offer prayers for his well-being and for the return of democracy in our nation."

Foreign Shelter Risks

Part of Justice Moraes's ruling was the chance of Bolsonaro's move to diplomatic missions near the residence, considering that the probes revealed a background of arranging to request asylum through a consular facility", a statement said.

It was only on last Friday that the ex-leader's attorneys asked the Supreme Court to permit him to serve his whole jail sentence under domestic detention, with tracking devices.

They also requested that he be permitted to depart his residence for medical care, saying he required regular treatment for pulmonary infections and other health problems.

Context of Sentencing

Bolsonaro was determined responsible of orchestrating a plot aimed at retaining his authority after he failed to win the 2022 election to his political opponent, Lula.

Supreme Court justices said that he had knowledge of a plan which included plans to murder his opponent and his vice-presidential running mate, his vice-presidential candidate, and to arrest and execute the presiding judge - the Supreme Court justice who has been presiding over his judicial proceedings.

The conspiracy was thwarted because it didn't receive the endorsement of the military leaders. His successor was inaugurated without incident on January 1st, 2023.

The law enforcement stepped in and around 1,500 people were taken into custody.

The magistrates found that the protesters had been encouraged by the former president whose plan, they said, was for the national armed forces to take action, restore order and reinstate his authority.

At the moment, the legal team called the 27 years and three months sentence unreasonably severe".

He was also banned from seeking elected position until twenty-sixty - eight years later after the end of his sentence.

The ex-leader called the court case a political persecution and said it was designed to prevent him competing in the next presidential race.
